China Adoption

China has changed their eligibility requirements for adoptive parents making it easier for more people to adopt a young child with minor special needs.

  • Single women can adopt so long as there is no more than a 45 year age gap between the mother and child;
  • Couple over 50 can adopt so long as the age difference between the child and the younger spouse is no more than 50 years;
  • Families with 5 or more children living at home are now eligible to adopt;
  • China has a list of medical conditions that make a adoptive parent ineligible to adopt; however they have changed this restriction to allow that if one of the parents is healthy, and the other parent’s medical condition is manageable with treatment, it will consider an exemption to the medical restrictions;
  • HiV positive and multiple sclerosis have been added to the list of medical conditions that may make you ineligible to adopt.
  • Family’s annual income must still be equal to at least $10,000 for each family member in the household (including the child to be adopted), but China now allows for an exception if their annual income is above the average local living standards of the jurisdiction of residence.

Keep in mind that almost all children adopted from China have special needs, but relatively young kids with minor medical special needs are included in these changes.

There are also changes in post adoption requirements and fees. All changes apply to adoptive families whose dossiers are logged in after Jan. 1, 2015. For details on these changes and all other requirements for adoption from China go to the Creating a Family China Adoption Comparison Chart.
