Xander is a happy, active 6 year old boy who gets along well with both peers and adults. He participated in our China Summer Hosting program. His host parents stated
"Xander is a very pleasant child. He was soft spoken and always happy. He was interactive with all the people in our family, including extended family members; he enjoyed being with people and enjoyed going places. Xander bonded with our two oldest children the most! He was quick to learn about electronics; for example, I gave him my phone to look at pictures and he learned to reverse the camera to take pictures of himself and he learned on his own to take video as well. Xander was great eater and we allowed him to eat as much as he wanted all day. He was restricted to eating in a designated area, which he complied. He learned to help himself to the fruit in the refrigerator that I had on hand for him. All fruit was his favorite... more than candy! The biggest signs of Xander's mental delay in my opinion were his physical appearances: flat face, attached ear lobes, duck feet with an instep, short fingers. I didn't feel he was delayed mentally. Perhaps he is mentally delayed in the sense that he doesn't learn math or reading in the ways most do. But Xander seemed rather "normal" to me. He was even quick to learn English words and their meanings; and when he wasn't learning their meanings, he was eager to copy/repeat/mimic what we were saying even though he didn't know what we were saying!"
He is potty trained and can dress himself, but usually needs some help to take a shower. When we visited Xander, he enjoyed singing along with songs he knew and dancing to them with his friends. His smile would light up the room! Xander is personable and energetic, and loves using his abilities to help others.
