Location: Eastern Europe
Birth Year: 2004
Erin was born in July 2004. She is a healthy child with age-appropriate gross motor, fine motor, and verbal skills. She has a mild intellectual disability. Erin is a calm and patient girl who prefers quiet, independent play and enjoys activities such as coloring, drawing, puzzles, and playing with dolls. She is respectful of adults and their authority and readily helps out with household chores in her foster home. Erin takes an interest in her appearance, keeps herself neat and clean, and manages personal hygiene skills independently. Erin shows initiative and persistence and willingly completes any task she is given. She knows the address of her foster home and is able to get there and back from school on her own. At present Erin attends a school for children with special needs, where she is, by far, the most capable child in the class. She struggles with attention span and focus but has made significant progress in learning as a result of the individualized attention she receives from the teachers. Erin does not have the opportunity to interact with same-age peers at school or at home which likely contributes to her preference for younger activities. Erin was given a diagnosis of childhood schizophrenia by a psychiatrist who has a reputation for “over diagnosing” this condition. A different physician who reassessed Erin rejected the diagnosis of schizophrenia and confirmed that Erin only has a mild cognitive delay. This charming girl would thrive with the support and love of a family of her own.
