Bekkah was born in early 2006 and lived with her birth family until mid-2008. She has been diagnosed with scoliosis, strabismus, hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy, microcephaly with stationary internal hydrocephalus, infantile cerebral palsy, fibrotic changes in her right lung caused by chronic microaspirations, and epilepsy. Bekkah takes medication for her epilepsy, but still experiences brief seizures. She is fed through a tube to prevent aspiration. Her development is profoundly delayed.
Bekkah can move her arms and legs to a certain extent, but is unable to crawl, stand or walk. She sits with support and has head control. Bekkah follows objects and people with her eyes, responds to sounds and listens intently to other people's speech, distinguishing between different tones of voice. Bekkah recognizes familiar adults and children and is excited by the presence of other kids. Bekkah understands and follows simple instructions and babbles a bit.
Bekkah loves music and sometimes makes vocalizations along with the melodies. She recognizes the voices of her roommates and is in low spirits when they are not around. Bekkah responds emotionally to jests.
