Course Overview:

How do you form attachment and build family connections in adoption? Dawn Davenport, Executive Director of Creating a Family, the national infertility & adoption education and support nonprofit, interviews Dr. Karyn Purvis. Dr. Purvis is the author of The Connected Child: Bring Hope and Healing to Your Adoptive Family.  In this course, we discuss how to establish the bonds of connection with your adopted child.

Course Outline & Bibliography

Participants will be able to:

  • Identify the age when a child is at the greatest risk of developing attachment disorders.
  • List the six risk factors for developing attachment disorders.
  • Explain the ratio between developmental delays and time spent in an orphanage.
  • Name two predictors of optimal childhood development.
  • List two techniques to establish routines for children with attachment disorders.
  • Identify two techniques for dealing with children with food issues.
  • Describe the prognosis for children with attachment disorders and the likelihood of them making significant improvements.

Creating a Family – The National Adoption and Infertility Education and Support Nonprofit maintains responsibility for the program. ASWB Approval Period: 10/17/2016 – 10/17/2017. Social workers should contact their regulatory board to determine course approval for continuing education credits. Social workers participating in this course will receive 1 continuing education clock hours.
