Q: What things should I incorporate into my holiday tradition to help me survive while I am still unsuccessful at fertility treatment?
A: Dr. Ali Domar suggests that you and your partner can sit down and decide which traditions are important for you and the family you already are. You might take some of his traditions, some of yours and create some new ones just for you. I do recommend avoiding events which can be painful for you (being at malls at times where there are lines of kids waiting to see Santa, family oriented church services, family present opening rituals) and engaging in events which are comfortable and meaningful for you. Skipping events altogether is perfectly okay. Nurture yourself this season, and remember that infertility doesn’t go on forever.
Dr. Ali Domar is a leading expert in mind/body medicine, Director of the Mind/Body Center for Women’s Health at Boston IVF, and Assistant Professor of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Reproductive Biology at Harvard Medical School.
