Dawn Davenport, Executive Director of Creating a Family, the national infertility & adoption education and support nonprofit, interviews Dr. Dan Siegel on the importance of parental attachment style in adoption. There has been a great deal of focus in recent years on the importance of creating healthy attachment in adopted children. Research has shown that healthy secure attachment to a caregiver is crucial for psychological development in children. Attachment, however, is a two-way street, and little focus has been given to the importance of parents attaching to the child. This course addresses the basics of attachment, the impact of parental attachment style on the attachment relationship with adopted children, how social workers can assess parental attachment style, and provides tips for improving parent/child attachment.
