Age Requirements and Chinese Adoptions

Q&A with the Experts

Age Requirements and Chinese AdoptionsQ: I have a question about adopting from China. My friend has met a specific child in China that is in a foster home there and knows she is suppose to adopt her. But she is not 30 years old.  She is 27 and her husband is 28. Are there age waivers in China or do you have any ideas or suggestions about how she can make it happen?

A: China does not usually waive age requirements. Also, it is very difficult to adopt a preselected child from China. Their system is not set up for this type of adoption. It is highly unlikely that your friend will be able to adopt this specific child. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. To get a second opinion, I’d recommend contacting an agency that has a long standing program in China and see what they say.
